CHERRY RED RECORDS COMBINED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER NORTH
SATURDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2024
EGHAM TOWN 5 (2)
Ben Peden 2 (8, 58), Bradley Clayton 2 (10, 66), Zac Hawker (69)
ARDLEY UNITED 0 (0)
Until North Greenford United levelled at home to Virginia Water in the 75th minute, Egham Town were top of CCL Premier North as they swept away Ardley United. The Sarnies started and finished the day in second place, and were facing a side one place and one point behind them.
Fielding a side more recognisable than that which lost 0-3 on Wednesday at Wokingham Town in a League Cup tie, it took Jordan Berry’s side just eight minutes to take the lead. Luke Heneghan swung in a free kick, skipper Reece Yorke almost capitalised and with the visiting defence floundering, Ben Peden found a gap for the first goal. Two minutes later some calamitous defending by Ardley contributed to the second. Jordan Brown’s shot was returned to him by Freddie Joyce. Brown tried again, and the ball rebounded to Bradley Clayton, who hammered the ball beyond keeper John Roberts. Egham could have gone further ahead after 30 minutes when Clayton found Brown, but Roberts pulled off a fine save. Tyrique Tekasala was unlucky to see his shot parried clear, and as the half closed Brown was let down by a heavy touch as he chased a through ball.
Two minutes into the second half Clayton came close with a clever, undercut shot that only just cleared the bar, and ten minutes later it was Clayton threatening again, a magnificent, curling shot pulling a truly astonishing save from Roberts. It didn’t do the opposition much good though, as from Heneghan’s corner Peden headed the ball in for 3-0. Clayton joined him on two goals after 66 minutes, after Brown had had a fierce shot blocked. Clayton was on hand to control the ball and rifled his shot into the bottom right corner. The fifth goal was simplicity itself, Zac Hawker just beating Yorke to the ball for a thumping header from Clayton’s corner.
The win was impressive, but only 12 games into the season. Two sides, Harefield United and Amersham Town, have played half that number because of decent runs in the FA Vase and FA Cup respectively. Egham travel on Tuesday to Slough Town, not to take on the Rebels, but to face Virginia Water, who moved home from Windsor’s Stag Meadow. Games between the Sarnies and Waters have usually been pretty tight. On Saturday Egham entertain Wallingford & Crowmarsh. In the FA Vase First Round, to be played on 19th October, Egham will face CCL One side Colliers Wood United at home.
