Karl Oliyide’s 100th minute clinically finished 100th minute goal set the seal on a match that saw Egham Town grind out a win against gritty opposition.
Egham started (and finished) the day top of CCL Premier North, and, having beaten “local” rivals Virginia Water 4-1 in midweek would have fancied their chances against a side in 13th place. Early domination led to a shot by Ben Peden that flew just wide. Bradley Clayton was unlucky not to score after Zac Hawker had headed the ball into the path of the marauding Jordan Brown. Unfortunately, the next clear chance led to a goal at the wrong end, Luke Heneghan finding Brown for a shot that keeper Henry Woodcock gathered. His long punt upfield landed between skipper Reece Yorke and Tyrique Tekasala, and fell nicely for Ty Hamilton to steer the ball beyond Tyler Tobin in the Egham goal. The response was immediate and emphatic, Peden getting his head to Hawker’s flick on off Clayton’s corner. Four goals in three games is not bad for a forward; for a right back it is almost unheard of! Wallingford & Crowmarsh were clearly determined not to fold, Caelan Isaac forcing Tobin to save and, a couple of minutes into the second period, lobbing the ball just over the Sarnies’ bar. The second period was punctuated by several injury breaks for the visitors, which could have broken Egham’s concentration. Despite Yorke having to leave the field soon after the restart, replaced by Alex Nolan, the home side maintained focus and in the 77th minute another defender gave them the lead. Samad Kazi, as remarkably dependable a player as any manager could wish for, stole in to divert Clayton’s free kick and the win was all but achieved. The injury time amassed did no favours for the visitors, who had failed to test the Sarnies’ back four after half-time. Ten minutes after regulation time Josh Williams and Tekasala combined before the latter drilled in a cross that Oliyide controlled before sliding the third goal in. The striker had made his debut for Egham at Burnham, but went off injured in the first half, so it was good to see him back in action.
The next game is on Saturday at Holloways Park, home of Beaconsfield Town, to face Hilltop, who are in 6th place after a 4-1 win at British Airways. Six of the top eight can reflect on victories, the other two not having played. The gap between Egham Town and North Greenford United is just two points, with the South London side having a game in hand.
Attention then turns to the Isuzu FA Vase on 19 October, and the visit of Colliers Wood United.
