Another frustrating draw was all that Egham had from a night in which, for the first 43 minutes, they played better than any time this season.
Knowing that Amersham Town are no longer the easy touches they used to be, they were first to every loose ball, won most tackles, were dominant in the air and, crucially, had something tangible to show for their endeavours. Then it went wrong.
A more than solid opening included managing for a few minutes without talismanic skipper Reece Yorke, off the pitch to have a head wound bandaged up. The white strip on Yorke’s bonce must have bedazzled the Magpies’ defence, as he rose to head in a Luke Heneghan corner kick moments after getting back on the park. Half an hour in and Egham were two to the good as another Heneghan corner created problems for the visitors, Samad Kazi touched the ball back for Marley Anderson-Richards and he slammed the ball into the Amersham net.
Egham were in control of this match, every player winning his own personal battles with his opposite number. This was the sort of football needed against a decent side, but in the 46th minute a gap opened up in the defence after a corner and Adeymi Adewale poked the ball in. A couple of minutes later the lead, so well won, had gone after Harlem Hale was adjudged to have made a foul on the edge of the box. The man to take advantage was ex-Sarnie Louis Stead, who whipped in a well-struck free kick just inside the near post and just beyond the reach of Tyler Tobin in the Egham goal.
Having equalised, Stead nearly put the visitors ahead with another dead ball kick just seconds after the restart, but fortunately for Egham hit the left post. Anderson-Richards could not quite get enough of a touch on a Heneghan free kick as Egham pushed on, but the first half domination and cohesion were not as evident. Reece Mitchell gave way to Danny Campion, who was almost immediately flattened by Harry Bishop’s clattering foul. Brainlessly, Bishop repeated the trick seconds later, on Harlem Hale, and having picked up yellow cards for both misdemeanours, was summarily dismissed. Campion was close with a chance created by Hale and Jordan Brown, and Ben Peden won a corner from which he headed over, but there was little to suggest that Egham would regain their lead. Samir Shaffi then became the second Magpie miscreant, again for two card-worthy fouls, and Amersham shut up shop enough to block out their hosts but with enough threat for Stead to break loose in the 86th minute and only be denied an undeserved winner by a combination of Tobin and Kyle Walton.
Mr Heneghan was incandescent with rage at the end. So was I, but Luke said it better than I did.
Harefield United away, on Saturday, won’t be a walkover either. On Wednesday a trip to Wokingham Town for a League Cup tie awaits.
