On the face of it this might look like a good result as two teams in decent form, positioned fourth and third, up against each other, neither willing to give an inch to the opposition. There was, though, the feeling that second half domination might have seen the Sarnies get all three points. Early Egham pressure gave way to Holyport testing a determined home back four, and the sin-binning of skipper Reece Yorke. While he was on the sidelines, there was a passage of home play best described as unwise, leading to a corner from which Sekani McCalmon headed wide. Reece Mitchell forced a decent save from Sam Hayes in the Holyport goal, and from the corner Samad Kazi’s curler bent just a little too late. Marley Anderson-Richards’ solid midfield tackling created the next chance, Jordan Brown drilling a cross-shot that Hayes saved.
Changes were made at the break. Erand Saraqi made his debut, replacing Alex Nolan at right back, Ben Peden came on for Kyle Brooks in midfield, and Harlem Hale replaced Montel Brown. Egham gained more control of the middle of the park, and could/should have taken the lead after an excellent break that saw Hale and Brown continue a move started by Tyrique Tekasala. Unfortunately, Tekasala was not able to give the move the ending it deserved. Marley Anderson-Richards made way for Kristian Swaby, who was almost instantly involved in the Sarnies’ dead ball plays. With seven minutes left, Yorke’s superb 40 yards pass found Hale on the right, but from his cross Joran’s flying header flew wide. The home fans were enraged when referee Matthew Barrett did nothing after a clear foul on Mitchell in the box. Egham were certainly having the majority of possession, but with Hayes too often in the right place for Egham’s liking, the game ended with honours, but NOT points, shared.
Egham play Amersham Town on Tuesday, former Sarnie Louis Stead scoring a very late winner in an FA Cup tie.
