After Tuesday’s heroics, being the first (and, so far, only) side not to lose to North Greenford United, Egham had to put out another rejigged side for a trip to Edgware & Kingsbury. With Eric Negraru replacing Tyler Tobin in goal (Tobin should be back for Saturday), Soul Hale coming in at right back instead of the crocked Kyle Watson and former Northwood striker Jordan Brown making his debut, and Ed Clements leaving the club, the Sarnies could have been forgiven for an unfocused start.
Facing a side with a 3-0 win against Virginia Water in their last home game, Egham needed to impose themselves on the game early on. Ten minutes in, and that is exactly what they did. Alex Nolan slid a perfect pass down the right for Harlem Hale (Soul’s brother), and from his low, perfectly weighted pass, Brown tucked the ball away.
The lead was held comfortably enough, and extended after “H”, running on to a pass from Brown, was flattened in the box. Home keeper Alfie Langford had little hope with the penalty. Similarly, he had little chance with Hale’s second spot kick, the penalty awarded for a clear tug on Zac Hawker. Danny Campion replaced Brown in the 52nd minute, a lively start from the mercurial striker seeing him haring down the right wing and firing a shot that Langford pushed out for a corner. Soon after, it was 4-0, a free kick giving Luke Heneghan the opportunity to leather the ball through Langford’s attempted save from just outside the box after he had been fouled.
The home side pulled a goal back, in fortuitous fashion. An Egham attack broke down, Edgware & Kingsbury moved the ball at speed down their left wing, and a dangerous looking cross was diverted into Negraru’s net. Apparently, the final touch was from Samad Kazi. To be honest it could have been anyone. If he needed cheering up after this, he would have been happy to see his pal Ryan Murad move from Corinthian-Casuals to Egham and have a decent debut. Replacing the senior Hale, Murad was unlucky to shoot wide when set up by Campion, but when the roles were reversed four minutes into injury time there was a better outcome. Murad won a stern challenge with defender Eren Oruk, before his square pass found Campion, who guided the ball past Langford.
With that the final play of the match, the Sarnies will be happy to have risen to 4th before a couple of tricky looking matches at home. First up are Holyport, who are 3rd, having had a remarkable 5-2 win over Amersham Town. The latter side then visit Runnymede Stadium on 17 September.
